Vitamins, minerals, and supplements for MS

Alpha Lipoic Acid for MS

Vitamin D3 for Multiple Sclerosis

Vitamin D3 for Multiple Sclerosis

There are conclusive studies proving that Alpha Lipoic Acid is exceptional at reducing brain atrophy in SPMS Patients. As probably many of you know, the double blind study on 54 SPMS patients half of them being given 1200 mg ALA and half a placebo showed unequivocally that the ALA group had a 70% decrease in brain atrophy than the placebo group over the course of 96 weeks. Why is this exceptional? Well first, because brain atrophy in SPMS is the real predictor of disability, more so than the number of relapses (if your MS is still active) or number of lesions. Second because Alpha Lipoic Acid was proven to be more effective than Ocrevus when comparing the effect both had against a placebo (Ocrevus had only decreased the brain atrophy by 40% while ALA by 68%. At first sight these numbers don't mean much but let's do some calculations. According to the study, there was a 0.65% yearly rate of brain atrophy for an SPMS patient (or 10 grams brain mass per year) versus 0.2% rate of yearly atrophy for an ALA supplementing MS patient (or 3 grams of Brain mass lost every year). If you assume this rate will be seen year after year, the difference is astounding...If we multiply those values by 40 (supposing that that is the number of years will be battling SPMS), we can calculate that a person with MS looses on average 400 grams (30% of Brain cells) , versus a person with MS that supplements with ALA that would only lose 120 grams of brain matter (8% of brain cells) which is considered normal brain atrophy.

Research suggests that a   link between vitamin D and MS.  The link   between vitamin D and MS is strengthened by the   association between sunlight and the risk of MS.   Vitamin D   may lessen the frequency and severity of MS symptoms.    Most Neurologist will test your D3 levels to find out if you are deficient (below 15 ng/ML).  With that said, many of us supplement our diets with 2000 mg. of D3 taken once or twice a day.

Fish Oil/Krill for MS

Vitamin D3 for Multiple Sclerosis

Vitamin B Complex for MS

These provide Omega-3 fatty   acids, in the group called polyunsaturated fats which are considered a   healthy fat that lowers the risk of heart disease. It can be found in salmon,   tuna, sardines and mackerel. Studies giving MS patients Omega-3 supplements along   with Avonex, Betaseron, Copaxone, or Rebif showed it could reduce the   efficacy of those MS disease-modifying therapies. Researchers do not   recommend using Omega-3s in place of those disease-modifying drugs. Omega-3   can also interact negatively with anti-coagulant drugs such as Warfarin and   aspirin. Patients with comorbidities who want to take this supplement should   discuss using fish oil with their doctors.

Vitamin B Complex for MS

Cranberry Concentrate for MS

Vitamin B Complex for MS

Vitamin B complex includes thiamine (vitamin B1),   riboflavin (vitamin B2), pyridoxine (vitamin B6), and cyanocobalamin (vitamin   B12). While this array of B vitamins work together in beneficial ways, some   studies claim that B6—pyridoxine—can reduce inflammation in autoimmune   disease.

Many MS patients taking mega doses from 4,200 -   25,000 mg of Cranberry Juice extract report it effective preventing UTI. There are no scientific studies to   substantiate this. You must also be   cautious if you are prone to kidney stones    blood or pull from your bones.

N-acetyl cysteine (NAC)

N-acetyl cysteine (NAC)

N-acetyl cysteine (NAC)

In a  study done by the Department of Integrative Medicine and Nutritional Sciences, as well as the Departments of Neurology and Radiology, at Thomas Jefferson University patients who took   500mg NAC orally 2x per day  showed improved brain metabolism and self-reported improvements in cognitive function in patients with multiple sclerosis.

Biotin (B7) for MS

N-acetyl cysteine (NAC)

N-acetyl cysteine (NAC)

In a small study biotin was   found to be somewhat beneficial to those with progressive MS. MD1003 is a new drug study which is   currently underway to test the effectivity on MS.   https://www.emaxhealth.com/1275/progressive-multiple-sclerosis-responds-biotin?fbclid=IwAR0QJcOVkvikBVgIriFKyfxWCW2TcG_5Re8L7hCv-RjUBRKHwaXY6vbJF3Q

Turmeric for MS

N-acetyl cysteine (NAC)

Probiotics for MS

Turmeric’s anti-inflammatory property   prevents flare-ups and alleviates symptoms of pain while restoring mobility   to affected parts of the body. Turmeric’s ability to eliminate free radicals   makes it an appropriate natural pharmacological agent for Multiple Sclerosis   therapy.
    1. Turmeric and curcumin are neuroprotective agents
    2. It has natural anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects
    3. Curcumin is a promising nutraceutical agent for multiple sclerosis
    4. It has immunomodulatory property that can benefit in multiple   sclerosis
    5. It regulates T cell mechanisms to reduce autoimmune responses in   multiple sclerosis
    6. It regulates gene expression that may benefit in multiple   sclerosis
    7. It protects cognition
    8. It attenuates fatigue

Probiotics for MS

Probiotics for MS

Probiotics for MS

With increased evidence   showing that many with MS suffer from leaky gut syndrome, Probiotics has   become an option. Each strain of   pro-biotics effects different parts of the body. Consider the following: Probiotics:

    L. plantarum. helps treat IBS, Crohn's disease and colitis. It preserves   critical nutrients, vitamins and antioxidants.
    B. bifidum. helps to stop the   increase of bad bacteria, heightens the immune system, and aids in the   digestion process, specifically of dairy products.
    L. rhamnosus. This strain aids in the prevention of urinary tract   infections (UTI), especially those caused by antibiotics. It also helps to   build the immune system, assists in digestion of dairy products and helps to   fight intestinal tract illnesses.
    L. bulgaricus works in your intestinal lining as an enforcer by getting rid   of any toxins. This strain also creates its own natural antibiotics.

 L. salivarius makes enzymes that kill bad bacteria, including the kind that   causes bad breath. It also helps with flatulence and bloating      Lactobacillus brevis is used to treat vaginitis, urinary tract infections, to   promote better immune function, and as an aid in overall digestive   health.      L. acidophilus. This strain boosts the treatment of respiratory infections,   helps relieve IBS, decreases the frequency of yeast infections, reduces the   growth of pathogens in the digestive tract and produces lactase which helps   break down the sugar in milk.       B. lactis. This increases immune function, helps to fight off infections,   makes faster recovery times possible, and helps to prevent diarrhea in both   adults and children.       Lactobacillus paracasei has been identified as a bacterium that has   probiotic properties.[1] L. paracasei is a part of the normal human gut   microbiota       L. casei. This assists with digestion issues including Crohn's disease, ulcers   and other gastrointestinal problems.

Calcium for MS

Probiotics for MS

More Probiotic

This is only here because of the need to take it if you are using magnesium supplements.  Magnesium requires calcium to be absorbed in the body.  If you don't take double the calcium as your magnesium supplement, your body will pull calcium out of itself to absorb the magnesium.  This is serious!  Not only will your calcium levels drop in your blood, but your body begins to canibilize stored calcium (in your bones) to counter the effects of magnesium.  The  calcium/magnesium ratio is 2:1.  That is two parts calcium to one part magnesium.  Example: 1000 mg. of Calcium is needed to process 500 mg. of magnesium.

9. Topical Magnesium chloride spray

4.Magnesium oxide, 5.Magnesium orotate, 6. Magnesium chloride

7. Magnesium sulfate, 8.Magnesium taurate

regulates neuromuscular   signals, muscle contractions and balancing calcium levels within the body,   magnesium can help muscles relax and contract, easing pain , releases cramps   and it also absorbs through the skin. This is great at calming spasming muscles. Simply spray it on and message it in. Everyone with MS should have a bottle.

Vitamins A, C, & E

Vitamins   A, C, and E are antioxidant vitamins. They are thought to prevent damage   caused by free radicals. Researchers recommend that it is safer to consume   these from eating fruits and vegetables rather than from supplements. Safety   has not been established for the supplemental version. There is also what   researchers call a “theoretical” risk in taking substances such as   antioxidants that stimulate the immune system. Those of us with autoimmune   diseases need to assess the risk by considering how active our MS is and   keeping track of how our bodies have reacted to green tea and other   substances that include immuno-stimulants.
