There are conclusive studies proving that Alpha Lipoic Acid is exceptional at reducing brain atrophy in SPMS Patients. As probably many of you know, the double blind study on 54 SPMS patients half of them being given 1200 mg ALA and half a placebo showed unequivocally that the ALA group had a 70% decrease in brain atrophy than the placebo group over the course of 96 weeks. Why is this exceptional? Well first, because brain atrophy in SPMS is the real predictor of disability, more so than the number of relapses (if your MS is still active) or number of lesions. Second because Alpha Lipoic Acid was proven to be more effective than Ocrevus when comparing the effect both had against a placebo (Ocrevus had only decreased the brain atrophy by 40% while ALA by 68%. At first sight these numbers don't mean much but let's do some calculations. According to the study, there was a 0.65% yearly rate of brain atrophy for an SPMS patient (or 10 grams brain mass per year) versus 0.2% rate of yearly atrophy for an ALA supplementing MS patient (or 3 grams of Brain mass lost every year). If you assume this rate will be seen year after year, the difference is astounding...If we multiply those values by 40 (supposing that that is the number of years will be battling SPMS), we can calculate that a person with MS looses on average 400 grams (30% of Brain cells) , versus a person with MS that supplements with ALA that would only lose 120 grams of brain matter (8% of brain cells) which is considered normal brain atrophy.
Research suggests that a link between vitamin D and MS. The link between vitamin D and MS is strengthened by the association between sunlight and the risk of MS. Vitamin D may lessen the frequency and severity of MS symptoms. Most Neurologist will test your D3 levels to find out if you are deficient (below 15 ng/ML). With that said, many of us supplement our diets with 2000 mg. of D3 taken once or twice a day.
These provide Omega-3 fatty acids, in the group called polyunsaturated fats which are considered a healthy fat that lowers the risk of heart disease. It can be found in salmon, tuna, sardines and mackerel. Studies giving MS patients Omega-3 supplements along with Avonex, Betaseron, Copaxone, or Rebif showed it could reduce the efficacy of those MS disease-modifying therapies. Researchers do not recommend using Omega-3s in place of those disease-modifying drugs. Omega-3 can also interact negatively with anti-coagulant drugs such as Warfarin and aspirin. Patients with comorbidities who want to take this supplement should discuss using fish oil with their doctors.
Vitamin B complex includes thiamine (vitamin B1), riboflavin (vitamin B2), pyridoxine (vitamin B6), and cyanocobalamin (vitamin B12). While this array of B vitamins work together in beneficial ways, some studies claim that B6—pyridoxine—can reduce inflammation in autoimmune disease.
Many MS patients taking mega doses from 4,200 - 25,000 mg of Cranberry Juice extract report it effective preventing UTI. There are no scientific studies to substantiate this. You must also be cautious if you are prone to kidney stones blood or pull from your bones.
In a study done by the Department of Integrative Medicine and Nutritional Sciences, as well as the Departments of Neurology and Radiology, at Thomas Jefferson University patients who took 500mg NAC orally 2x per day showed improved brain metabolism and self-reported improvements in cognitive function in patients with multiple sclerosis.
In a small study biotin was found to be somewhat beneficial to those with progressive MS. Vitamins A, C, and E are antioxidant vitamins. They are thought to prevent damage caused by free radicals. Researchers recommend that it is safer to consume these from eating fruits and vegetables rather than from supplements. Safety has not been established for the supplemental version. There is also what researchers call a “theoretical” risk in taking substances such as antioxidants that stimulate the immune system. Those of us with autoimmune diseases need to assess the risk by considering how active our MS is and keeping track of how our bodies have reacted to green tea and other substances that include immuno-stimulants.
